At Healing the Roots Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we believe every child deserves to grow up in a world where they feel loved, understood, and equipped to navigate life’s challenges. Yet, for many children, especially those who have experienced trauma, understanding and managing their emotions can be overwhelming.

We are dedicated to helping children thrive beyond adversity. Our mission focuses on fostering Social-Emotional Learning through CASEL’s SEL concepts and essential coping tools, alongside providing Social-Emotional Healing through targeted, culturally competent therapy.

We bridge educational gaps with personalized tutoring, ensuring that every child receives both the academic and emotional support they need. Our vision is to build a resilient community where every child can confidently face challenges, excel academically, and embrace a brighter future.

Portia Mills Henderson, Founder and President of Healing the Roots Foundation, is also the author behind Resilient Reads LLC, which developed the Nina’s Coping Toolbox curriculum used in our foundation. This curriculum remains the property of Resilient Reads LLC, and no profit is made off the books during their implementation in partnered schools or organizations. Outside sales of these books are an integral part of our sustainability plan, helping to support and sustain our programs. The children’s books available through our fundraiser are essential to this curriculum.
